Goldrush has recently spent 4 days at the Melbourne University Vet Clinic to undergo eye surgery.

His right eye started swelling and becoming weepy in January. After following the treatment advice of multiple different vets and still having no diagnosis or solution I found an eye specialist by the name of David Turner that recognized the issue immediately as a rare Equine Corneal Stromal Abcess.

The biggest issue for me was not the surgery itself but having Goldrush in a stable full time alone. He gets very worried, shakes constantly and will not eat or drink which leads to severe weight loss.

The clinic had a ‘no human living in stables’ policy so I did the same thing I always do… I sent his miniature pony Lil Boss with him (Yes its Goldrush’s pony that he takes everywhere) to live in the stable with him and keep him happy. The vet nurses were not very convinced of my idea but I think Boss soon won them over with his cuteness!! πŸ˜‚

I am so very glad I forced the issue of Little Boss staying in the same stable. Goldrush was feeling pretty miserable for himself after surgery and the excess bleeding and swelling on his bad eye due to smacking it on the wall when he was waking up from surgery meant he couldn’t see out of it.

The great news is that Goldrush is now back with me in, eating lots of carrots and healing well. He has an eye tube to administer his eye medication every 4 hours which will be taken out in the next 7 days.

He will make a full recovery within 6 weeks and then we will continue our journey from VIC to QLD while we prepare for our next 2-5 year adventure.
